Share Our Strength’s work to end childhood hunger in America has never been more important than it is right now. This year’s program will focus on how the No Kid Hungry campaign is ending childhood hunger in America by combining access, education and awareness — and how you can play an important role in the campaign.

 Hunger in America is pervasive. Food security is necessary to lead a productive, healthy, and active life. It has been reported that more than 49 million Americans lack reliable access to the food. Childhood hunger is a growing reality in America. In one of the wealthiest nations in the world, the prevalence of childhood hunger is a national travesty and for many a well kept secret.

Approximately, one in four children in America is food insecure. As is aptly stated in the materials by Share Our Strength i “No Hungry Kid”, “…their bodies may not be rail thin, nor their bellies bloated like their counterparts in other countries, but they’re at risk of hunger all the same. They lack the energy to learn, grow, and thrive.” It is a well known fact that proper nutrition is vital to the growth and development of healthy children.

Statistics on Childhood Hunger in the United States:
• According to the USDA, over 17 million children lived in food insecure (low food security and very low food security) households in 2009. ii

• 20% or more of the child population in 16 states and D.C. are living in food insecure households. The states of Arkansas (24.4 percent) and Texas (24.3 percent) have the highest rates of children in households without consistent access to food. (Cook, John, Child Food Insecurity in the United States: 2006-2008. iii

• In 2009, households that had higher rates of food insecurity than the national average included households with children (21.3 percent), especially households with children headed by single women (36.6 percent) or single men (27.8 percent), Black non-Hispanic households (24.9 percent) and Hispanic households (26.9 percent).v

These heartbreaking facts about the prevalence and the face of hunger in America have drawn the attention of many people including but not limited to Oscar winning actor, Jeff Bridges. Jeff Bridges is serving as the national spokesperson for the “No Kid Hungry Campaign”. To ensure that every child has the opportunity to achieve success, we must first ensure that their most basic needs are met.

March is Women’s History Month. This March, Sarah Lawrence College will be hosting the 15th annual Women’s History Conference entitled “Activism and Scholarship: A Conference Honoring Amy Swerdlow and Gerda Lerner”. Save the Date.

Round table discussion about the life and work of Amy Swerdlow and Gerda Lerner moderated by Blanche Wiesen Cook, author of The Biography of Eleanor Roosevelt Volumes 1 and 2.

Amy Swerdlow (1923-2012), graduate and former director of the women’s history graduate program at Sarah Lawrence College was a scholar, activist, teacher, mentor and mother. She was a founding member and a significant force in Women Strike for Peace, a grassroots movement that greatly influenced the end of above ground nuclear weapons testing, especially emphasizing the effect this had on children’s health. The organization went on to protest the Vietnam War. Amy Swerdlow sat on the national board of the antiwar group known as Clergy and Laity Concerned, chaired the steering committees of two antiwar coalitions of women’s groups, the Jeannette Rankin Brigade and the Women’s Emergency Coalition, and was a member of the New York State coordinating council of the National Women’s Political Caucus. Amy Swerdlow was the quintessential activist scholar.

Gerda Lerner (1920-2013) was co-founder of the women’s history graduate program at Sarah Lawrence and a pioneer in the field of women’s history. It was out of the 1979 Summer Institute at Sarah Lawrence organized by Gerda and the Women’s Action Alliance that Women’s History Week, later Women’s History Month, was born. Gerda Lerner leaves a prestigious legacy of scholarship. She was committed to making visible the ignored and debased, debunking the mythology of the unimportance and inaction of the underrepresented. Her groundbreaking Black Women in White America: A Documentary History, for example, forever shattered elite ideas of who makes history and whose history matters.

The Fifteenth Annual Women’s History Conference at Sarah Lawrence College honors Gerda Lerner and Amy Swerdow’s life and work as committed and indomitable activist/scholars by making issues of peace and justice its central theme.

We still face unending war, economic injustice, potential environmental catastrophe, militarism, institutionalized racism, hunger, homophobia and sexism among other issues. By taking a multi-disciplinary approach, we will explore issues of global peace and justice from a variety of perspectives. We seek to understand the ways in which activists have organized around these issues now and in the past and ask the following questions: What are the issues activists have faced in the past and how might we learn from previous movements? How do current issues intersect and interact and how can activists combine forces to confront these problems and work for social change? With the spirit of Amy Swerdlow and Gerda Lerner as our legacy, can we find the energy and focus to move forward together?

There will be sessions held which will prepare participants on how to: make the most of their meetings with Members of Congress, garner media attention for issues, and tried-and-true methods to get their agency’s message to lawmakers, neighbors, and friends.

For far too many women violence and danger are their constant companions. Despite concerted efforts to eradicate domestic violence, data indicates that intimate partner violence continues to pose a clear and present danger to the health and well-being of countless persons. Social science research indicates that one (1) in four (4) women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. [i] Indigent women are more vulnerable.

On average, more than three (3) women a day are murdered by their intimate partners in our country [ii]. [v] The dearth of safe, decent, affordable housing causes many poor women to confront the unenviable choice of homelessness or remaining in a home plagued by violence and turmoil resulting from domestic violence.

Nichelle Mitchem Poses the Important Question, “A Private Family Matter or Crime Against Society?”

Domestic violence continues to pose a clear and present danger to the health and well-being of countless persons. When any individual in the family is physically or emotionally hurt by another family member, it affects everyone in the home. Historically, domestic violence was framed exclusively as a women’s issue. However, domestic violence must be viewed as a problem not only affecting women — increasingly, intimate partner violence is a problem devastating every sector of society, overwhelming our courts and hospitals, spilling over into our streets, and filling our morgues. We must all be a part of the solution.

Violence against women is a pressing public health issue that has devastating physical and emotional consequences for women, children and families. Women are frequent targets of both physical and sexual assault by their intimate partners. In the United States alone, domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women between the ages of 15 and 44, more than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined. (Violence Against Women, A Majority Staff Report,” Committee on the Judiciary, United States Senate, 102^nd Congress, October 1992, p.3.)  About one in four women are physically or sexually abused at some point in their life, and domestic violence now leads as one of the top three causes of homelessness in America (Tjaden & Thoennes, 2000, U.S. Conference of Mayors, 2005).

While system responses to domestic violence are primarily targeted toward adult victims of abuse, increased attention is being focused on the child witnesses to domestic violence. Studies estimate that 10 to 20 percent of children are at risk for exposure to domestic violence (Carlson, 2000). These findings translate into approximately 3.3 to 10 million children who witness the abuse of a parent or caregiver each year (Carlson, 1984; Straus and Gelles, 1990).  Research also indicates that children exposed to domestic violence are at an increased risk of being abused or neglected (Edelson, 1999). Many studies reveal there are adult and child victims in 30 to 60 percent of families experiencing domestic violence (Appel and Holden, 1998; Edleson, 1999; Jaffe and Wolfe, 1990). All women, children and men have the right to live in a safe environment and to conduct their lives without emotional, physical or sexual abuse or the fear of abuse.

Often, one of the greatest concerns for battered women is the effect of living in a violent home environment on children. The effects of witnessing violence at home vary greatly from one child to another. When children witness domestic abuse, they can internalize the pain of the victim or become accustomed to violence as normal, perpetuating the cycle. Often, children that witness violence at home display a variety of emotional, behavioral, social, and even physical effects, including anger, caretaking behavior, passivity, guilt, shame, fear, isolation, anxiety, and fear (Peled, Jaffe & Edleson, 1995). The longer the violence continues, the more enduring the effects on the children will become.

Research indicates that witnessing violence between one’s parents or caretakers is the strongest risk factor of transmitting violent behavior from one generation to the next (Frieze, & Browne, 1989; and Ohlin & Tonry, 2006). To learn and grow into a healthy adult, children must feel confident in the world and in themselves. Domestic violence can destroy a child’s confidence. In recognition of the devastation caused by domestic violence, many family violence programs offer counseling programs for battered women as well as programs for their children.  These counseling programs can assist abused women and their children to deal with their feelings and plan for their safety.

Domestic violence is not a private family matter as was once thought by some but rather a crime against society.  The pervasive problem of domestic violence takes everyone to make it stop. If you suspect that someone you know is a victim of any form of domestic violence, please talk to him or her, show your support, and encourage the person to seek help from a domestic violence agency. Keep in mind that expressing your concern for their health and well-being will let the person know that you care and may even save his or her life. Domestic violence can be eradicated with an equal amount of conscience, mind, heart, and collective action.

Pursuing Justice for Children and the Poor with Urgency and Persistence

“Bystander Intervention: From Its Roots To The Road Ahead”

This will be a global conference devoted to exploring the roots of the bystander approach to gender violence prevention, and helping to set an agenda for next steps in the field. MVP is organizing this dynamic, international conference as an opportunity for educators, activists, funders and others to explore the history, development and current state of efforts to engage bystanders in the prevention of sexual and domestic violence.

Leading experts in the bystander intervention movement will discuss a range of issues, such as men and women working together; designing effective bystander initiatives in diverse socioeconomic and racial/ethnic environments; working with organized athletics and Greeks on college campuses; bystander pedagogy; and efforts to design comprehensive bystander initiatives that address gender violence but also bullying, gay-bashing and other significant social problems.

MVP Mission

MVP provides the leadership necessary, within sport and beyond, to address the global issues of sexism – especially men’s violence against women. In our advocacy efforts and training programs, we educate, inspire and empower men & women to prevent, interrupt and respond to sexist abuse.

MVP introduced bystander intervention to the gender violence prevention education field and has been on the cutting edge of its development since the early nineties. The chief curricular innovation of MVP is a training tool called the Playbook, which consists of a series of realistic scenarios depicting abusive male (and sometimes female) behavior. The Playbook – with separate versions for men and women — transports participants into scenarios as witnesses to actual or potential abuse then challenges them to consider a number of concrete options for intervention before, during, or after an incident. Many people mistakenly believe that they have only two options in instances of actual or potential violence: intervene physically and possibly expose themselves to personal harm, or do nothing. As a result, they often choose to do nothing.

But intervening physically or doing nothing are not the only possible choices. The MVP Model seeks to provide bystanders with numerous options, most of which carry no risk of personal injury. With more options to choose from, people are more likely to respond and not be passive and silent – and hence complicit – in violence or abuse by others. Many young men and women, and people in U.S. society in general, have been socialized to be passive bystanders in the face of sexist abuse and violence. This conditioning is reflected in the oft-heard statement that a situation “between a man and a woman” is “none of my business.”

MVP Training Goals

• Raise participant awareness of underlying issues and unique dynamics of all forms of men’s violence against women
• Challenge participants to think critically and personally (empathize) about these issues
• Open dialogue amongst participants about the dynamics and context of all forms of men’s violence against women
• Inspire participants to be proactive leaders around these issues by challenging them to develop concrete options for intervention in potentially dangerous situations involving peers

2012 National Conference on Health and Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women – more than car accidents, muggings, and rape combined. And studies suggest that up to ten (10) million children witness some form of domestic abuse annually. Everyone has a right to be safe.

Research data indicates that when different members of the community coordinated their efforts to protect battered women and hold batterers accountable, these efforts were more successful. Coordination helps to ensure that the system works faster and better for victims, that victims are protected and receive the services they need, and that batterers are held accountable and cease their abusive behavior. A critical first step toward coordinating responses is developing a common understanding of domestic violence.

Law enforcement agencies, advocates, health care providers, child protection services, local businesses, the media, employers and clergy can—and ideally should—be involved in a coordinated community response. Health care providers, in particular, can be important participants. Doctors, nurses and emergency room workers may see and treat women who do not or cannot seek other kinds of assistance. Coordinated community response programs often work to create a network of support for victims and their families that is both available and accessible. Coordinated community response programs often use the full extent of the community’s legal system to protect victims, hold batterers accountable, and enforce the community’s intolerance of domestic violence. Coordinated community response programs also often engage the entire community in efforts to change the social norms and attitudes that contribute to domestic violence. The 6th Biennial National Conference on Health and Domestic Violence will feature cutting-edge research and practice on the intersection of healthcare and violence prevention. Workshops, scientific posters, and plenary sessions highlight the latest research and most innovative clinical responses to domestic violence, with a focus on the work being done by physicians, physician assistants, dentists, nurses, nurse midwives, mental and behavioral health providers, social workers, domestic violence experts, researchers and others. The Conference includes an Exhibit Hall to feature local and national resources. The Conference is primarily funded by the Administration on Children, Youth and Families, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

With thirteen (13) in-depth Pre-Conference Institutes, one hundred and seventy (170) workshop presentations, in addition to plenary and keynote sessions, the Conference is one of the largest forums of its kind for advocates, clinicians, and researchers.

NCADV, in partnership with the National Organization for Men Against Sexism (NOMAS), will be holding their next conference, Preserving Our Roots While Looking to the Future, July 21-25, 2012 at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in Denver, Colorado.

The Mission of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) is to organize for collective power by advancing transformative work, thinking and leadership of communities and individuals working to end the violence in our lives.

NCADV believes violence against women and children results from the use of force or threat to achieve and maintain control over others in intimate relationships, and from societal abuse of power and domination in the forms of sexism, racism, homophobia, classism, anti-Semitism, able-bodyism, ageism and other oppressions. NCADV recognizes that the abuses of power in society foster battering by perpetuating conditions, which condone violence against women and children. Therefore, it is the mission of NCADV to work for major societal changes necessary to eliminate both personal and societal violence against all women and children.

The National Organization for Men Against Sexism (NOMAS) is an activist organization of men and women supporting positive changes for men. At NOMAS’ Men and Masculinity conferences, we evaluate and examine diverse aspects in gender identity, gender roles, the construction of masculinity, and the experiences of men’s lives, specifically as related to the role of men as allies to the women’s and sexual assault domestic violence movements.

Both post-conference institutes will be available to conference registrants for no additional fee. We will also be offering special registration rates for the post-conference institutes only. More information will be coming soon.

The plenary sessions that will be held over the course of the conference will be on the topics of:

• Intersecting Violences
• Radical Solutions for Ending Violence
• Women’s Use of Violence
• The Effects of Domestic Violence on Children

NCADV will be offering five workshop tracks during this conference (workshop tracks consist of 5 workshops and 2 strategy sessions on the specific topics below):

• The Effects of Domestic Violence on Children
• Intersecting Violences
• Radical Solutions for Ending Violence
• Women’s Use of Violence
• National Organization for Men Against Sexism

They will also be offering mini-tracks (up to a total of 4 sessions over the course of the conference) on the topics of:

• Human Trafficking
• Elder Abuse
• Financial Education
• Animal abuse and domestic violence

They will be offering topic-specific strategy sessions on the afternoons of Monday, July 23rd and Tuesday, July 24th. The aim of these strategy sessions is for attendees to strategize, plan and produce a suggested idea or solution for addressing the issue of the session they attend. The idea or solution can take any form (ex: a call to the movement, a toolkit, a resource list, etc.). NCADV will distribute these ideas to the field following the conference.

Following the conference, we will be offering two post-conference institutes from 1pm to 5pm on Wednesday, July 25th:

• Institute on The Link Between Animal Abuse and Domestic Violence

NCADV’s Young Advocates for Peace Program will run concurrently with all conference events beginning on July 20th and ending on July 25th. More information about this program can be found here. You will be able to register your child or children for this program during registration.
