October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). This month, we will highlight the prevalence of violence in the lives of women and children. We will also discuss available resources for victims and their advocates.
Even today, domestic violence continues to pose a clear and present danger for countless women. Nichelle Mitchem, long-time advocate for battered women and their children, was interviewed by author Gerda Gallop-Goodman for her book, “Crimes Against Women” on the topic of violence against women.
Goodman and Mitchem agree that domestic violence is not a private family matter as was once thought by some but rather a crime against society. Nichelle Mitchem discussed the prevalence of domestic violence and the often long-standing detrimental effects of domestic violence on the victims’ health and well-being.
Nichelle addressed the importance of individual and group counseling in the process of rebuilding the victim’s life. Nichelle Mitchem highlighted the very necessary and life changing work undertaken by domestic violence agencies. Every day, domestic violence agencies all across our nation assist clients to rebuild their lives.
